biebrza_marshland_soil_11 (11) - soil moisture - unusual readings

Soil moisture measurements in different depths react in opposite directions.

Comments

  • These features may be attributed to percolation of water through highly porous organic soil with very shallow water table. Within the organic soil profile water quickly moves through the 0-15 cm layer until it reaches the water table which is located around the depth of 20 cm. Furthermore, plants are assimilating water that results in additional decrease of soil moisture in the root zone. Therefore, during the precipitation events or advection of ground water the soil moisture of deeper layers increases while the opposite situation occurs in the root zone.
